Two climates, one building, six months apart
Spokane asks a house to survive single digits in January and high nineties in July. We organise the work — and this site — around which of those you are dealing with today.
The work, both seasons
- Service and repairFurnaces, heat pumps, air conditioning and rooftop units. Diagnosed with instruments, priced in writing, explained afterwards.
- Planned maintenanceTwice a year for most buildings, once for most houses, written up against each unit. The plans page sets out exactly what is covered.
- Ducts and airflowSealing, repairs and measurement — the single most common fix for a room that has never worked properly.
- Filtration and ventilationStatic pressure measured first, then a filter or a cabinet chosen to suit it. Fresh-air routes in tighter houses.
- ReplacementSized from the building with a load calculation and quoted with the duct work included.
- Commercial plantPackaged units, splits, unit heaters and make-up air, on planned schedules with a record per site.
Both, and neither as an afterthought
Roughly half our week is houses and half is working buildings. The seasons run through both, which is why this site is split by season instead of by audience — a warehouse in January and a bungalow in January have more in common than a warehouse in January and a warehouse in July.
Both the winter and summer pages cover residential and commercial work properly, with a section each.
Before you call
Why is this site split by season instead of by residential and commercial?
Because a warehouse in January and a bungalow in January have more in common than a warehouse in January and the same warehouse in July. Both the winter and summer pages cover houses and buildings properly.
What causes ice dams?
Warm air getting into a cold attic melts snow on the upper roof; the water runs down to the cold eave and refreezes. The fix is stopping the heat getting up there, not working on the roof. Some of those heat paths are our trade and some are not — the ice dams page says which.
Can I fit a better filter for smoke season?
Only as far as your system can carry. A denser filter resists airflow, and past a point it means less air gets filtered at all. We measure static pressure and then say what grade is safe.
When should I book a check?
October for heating, April for cooling. Booked then it is a service visit; booked in January or July it is an emergency, and so is everybody else's.
My heat pump uses backup heat a lot. Is that normal?
In genuinely cold weather, yes. In mild weather it usually means the balance point or staging is set to bring it in too eagerly, which is a settings fix rather than a repair.
